Welcome to Kernow Chimney Sweep

Chimney sweeping is an ancient profession, going back as far as the sixteenth century. Today's chimney sweeps, however, are no longer Dickensian characters with black faces, but modern professional tradesmen. Growing numbers of people have a functioning coal or wood fire or stove in their homes and rely on the skill of today's chimney sweeps.

'Old-fashioned' fireplaces and multi-fuel stoves are coming back into favour, adding character to a room and providing warmth and comfort in winter months. However it is very important that such fireplaces and their chimneys are well-maintained in the interests of both efficiency and safety. The main role of the modern chimney sweep is to prevent chimney fires and reduce the risk of dangerous fume emissions from appliances and chimneys.

As a domestic fire burns, it releases gases which escape up the chimney and are released into the atmosphere. As these substances pass through the chimney, soot begins to collect on the chimney walls. This includes a flammable substance called creosote which can obstruct and eventually completely block the chimney. This in turn can lead to a chimney fire, threatening the whole house. Remember: never try to tackle a chimney fire yourself. Always call the fire brigade.

A good chimney sweep will have the necessary training and experience to notice problems which might lead to chimney fires or inefficient burning and will be able to bring these problems to your attention. You should have your chimney swept at least once a year or after a period of disuse.

A clean chimney is a safe chimney. Ring us today to arrange a visit.
