Common species of bird pests include feral pigeons, house sparrows, starlings and gulls.
Pigeons build their nests in or on buildings and other structures, where they are usually found on ledges under eaves or on girders. Feral pigeons normally feed in flocks and for most of the year rely mainly on spillage at food premises or on scraps.
House sparrow nests are built in a variety of places, including holes in walls and trees, in rainwater pipes, under eaves of houses and in the nests of other birds. The feeding habits of sparrows result often in the spoiling and fouling of foodstuffs with associated breakdown of hygiene as well as loss of the product.
Starlings build large nests, in cavities in trees and buildings. Fledging takes place after 21-23 days, and the young birds soon after become independent of their parents. Damage results from both the starlings’ feeding and roosting habits, and consists mainly of fouling and food removal.
Gulls often occur in large social flocks and can create substantial fouling problems.
Bird spiking is a simple and effective way of getting rid of birds. The spikes stop birds from landing on surfaces (walls, ledges, fences etc.) and interlink with one another to protect wider ledges.
Bird wiring can protect all kinds of ledges and is near invisible. It is more difficult to install than spiking and may cost more, but can be very effective.
Another method is to scare birds away using sonic devices or visual control methods. Sonic bird scarers send out distress calls and predator warning signals, frightening birds away from your buildings. Visual scares devices are cheaper but need moving about to create a threatening environment.
